    1. Mint

    Mint is easy to use, and it’s free, which makes it a top pick when it comes to budgeting apps. Link your bank accounts, credit cards, bills, and retirement accounts, and Mint will auto-import all of your transactions and information. I like this app because it combines the best of both worlds – a birds-eye-view of your finances and a detailed look into your spending habits.

    2. You Need a Budget (YNAB)

    You Need a Budget, or YNAB for short, is the Cadillac of budgeting apps. The software is designed to help you prioritize your spending for the ultimate budgeting experience. The downside is that the app isn’t free. After a 34-day free trial, you pay $7 a month with their annual plan. If you’re new to budgeting or if other apps haven’t worked for you, YNAB could be just what you need.

    3. Mvelopes

    I’m a big fan of cash envelope budgeting. Mvelopes takes your cash budget to a new level. In a world of debit and credit cards, the app lets you create a budget using digital envelopes. Connect your debit card, credit card, bank accounts, and other financial accounts with Mvelopes to import your transactions. The price starts at $6 a month and includes unlimited envelopes to manage your spending.

    EveryDollar is designed around Dave Ramsey’s 7 Baby Steps to help you get out of debt. But you’ll love this budgeting tool even if you’re not a Dave Ramsey fan.

    The best part is that it’s free to use if you manually enter your transactions. EveryDollar Plus lets you link your bank to import your transactions electronically. At $129.99 a year, EveryDollar Plus comes with access to Financial Peace University, making it a great deal.

    Tiller is a budget built around Google Sheets. But don’t worry. Even if you hate spreadsheets, you’ll love Tiller! The app sets everything up for you and automates your budgeting. Because it’s what all the students in my online course use, I worked with them to design a monthly budget tracker to help you plan your spending and get out of debt.

    Another app that uses the envelope budgeting system is Goodbudget. One of the best features of this program is that you can share your budget with your spouse or partner. You’ll never have to ask, “You spent how much on what? Why didn’t you tell me?” ever again. It’s free to use on two devices with up to 20 digital envelopes. Upgrade to their paid plan for unlimited envelopes and the ability do sync across five devices for $50 a year.

    Honeyfi is the first app designed specifically to simplify budgeting for couples. You can choose to share all or part of your spending transactions with your partner, making it a perfect way to stay in sync with money while keeping some freedom in your finances. Honeyfi tracks your spending, budget, and bills from one convenient dashboard. 

    Cost: 30-day free trial and is $9.99 per month or $59.99 a year.

    PocketGuard streamlines your budgeting to answer the question on every budgeter’s mind: How much money can I spend? With PocketGuard, you can see how much money is left “in your pocket” after accounting for bills and cash you set aside for savings goals. The app also allows you to track spending by category if you want a closer look at your expenses to help you stay on track. 

    Cost: Free but you’ll have to upgrade to PocketGuard Plus for $3.99 a month to add your own custom categories.

    Wally, or Wally+ if you’re on Android, streamlines budgeting to give you a snapshot of what you have coming in, what’s on its way out, and how much you have saved. The free app helps you take control of your spending and save pictures of receipts for every expense you track. It supports several currencies, making Wally a good choice if you live or travel outside of the US.

    For a free budgeting tool with a twist, look no further than Clarity Money. In addition to managing your budget and tracking expenses, the app analyzes your finances to help you make better decisions about your money. Clarity Money will also cancel unwanted subscriptions and monitor your credit score, which makes the app a personal finance powerhouse.

    Out of all of these budgeting apps, Tiller is the one I recommend for students in my course. But I understand that not everyone is a spreadsheet person. The apps on this list are all great, so you can’t go wrong no matter which you choose.
