  • You may feel as if you are all shopped out after the holidays. Hopefully, your budget isn’t completely busted and you can take advantage of some great deals coming up. Each month, certain items go on sale to lure shoppers in and for retailers to sell items that wouldn’t normally move from the shelves. Keep an eye on the items in this post when shopping in the coming month. They are the best things to buy in January to save yourself money.

The 6 Best Things to Buy In January:

    1.) Gym Memberships

Millions of people are resolving to work out. Whether to get healthy or lose weight, a gym membership is going to help achieve those goals. Gyms know this and are happy to offer great deals at the beginning of the year to lure in new clientele.

If you’ve been considering a membership, either for your resolution or in general, now is the time to tap into great savings. You can find free months of membership, enrollment fees waived and free personal training as gyms look to entice all the newly resolved hoping to make exercise a priority.

    2.) Health & Fitness Items

Just as gym owners are trying to tap into those making resolutions in the new year, retailers that carry health and fitness items are, too. January is a great time to find deals on home fitness equipment like treadmills, yoga supplies, free weights, and much more. The deals are best at the end of the month and moving into February as items are set to clearance to move them out of the store. I once scored hand weights for $2.00 each thanks to a clearance sale at the end of January.

    3.) Winter Coats & Clothing

January is a great time to buy winter coats, hats, mittens, and more. You’ll find great deals on these items as stores clear out to make room for spring clothing (you might not be thinking about spring break, but clothing merchandisers sure are).

This is also a great time to find clothing specific for outdoor activities. You can find outdoor running attire, clothing for skiing and snowboarding, as well as anything else you might be doing while outside during the cold.

    4.) Organization

Have you made any New Year’s resolutions around organizing your home? Retailers know there’s a good chance you did, and they are stocking their stores full of items for organizing. For some inspiration, you can learn how I set up an amazing organized pantry here.

You’ll find everything you need to make this resolution successful in the new year. These items don’t stick around in the stores for too long. During mid-month you’ll score great deals, especially if you aren’t set on a certain color or style.

    5.) Linens

Linens are one of the best things to buy in January. White sales got their name in the late 1800s. It was a marketing idea to lure shoppers into the stores after the Christmas shopping season had ended. Back then, linens were only white, and the name has stuck! Thankfully today you’ll find towels, blankets, sheets, pillows in all types of colors on sale in January.

I made over my master bedroom for under $100, and you can refresh your space with fresh linens and a little inspiration too for a great new look!

    6.) Furniture

If you’ve been planning on purchasing a piece of furniture and don’t mind last year’s styles, January is definitely the month to do it.   According to the Better Business Bureau, furniture goes on sale in January due to inventory restocking in February. You can find great deals on both floor models and discontinued pieces that might be leaving their showroom.

This January, there are plenty of deals to be had.  Check when the sales cycles occur, especially if you are making larger purchases in the coming months.  If you can hold off, you’ll find yourself hanging on to more of your hard-earned money. Consider using a personal financial planner like the one I created to help you set your goals, create your monthly budget setting aside monies to save for your purchases, and cash envelopes to keep you on track.
