  • If you’re looking for a simple Valentine’s craft that you can do with the kids, Wax Paper Crayon Hearts definitely fit the bill.  I love easy toddler crafts and this one is great for small children (despite the ironing).

When I was first learning how to budget I had to start doing free activities with my kids and this was one we really enjoyed.

What I like most about this activity is that it turns everyday objects – things you probably have lying around your house right now – into a beautiful symbol of Valentine’s love. Bonus: It’s a great way to get some use out of unwanted, broken crayons!

    Wax Paper Crayon Hearts:

To get started, you’ll need only four supplies:

    1. Crayons (red, pink and purple work great)
    2. Wax paper
    3. Craft paper (any wrapping paper will do)
    4. Ribbon

The ribbon will be used to hang the hearts in the window. If you don’t have ribbon, feel free to use string or thread.

First, you’ll need to shave your crayons. For mine, I used a cheese grater. You can also use a handheld pencil sharpener, but I think the cheese grater probably works best.

Next, place a sheet of craft paper or wrapping paper over your ironing board to protect it. Then take a piece of wax paper – about 12 to 18 inches long – and sprinkle some crayon shavings on one side (feel free to mix your colors). You don’t need a lot of shavings because when they melt, they’ll spread out. You also want the wax to be relatively thin so the light shines through the hearts

After the shavings are on the one side of the wax paper, fold the other side over the shavings and cover the wax paper with another piece of craft paper. Then iron the paper evenly for about 30 seconds using medium heat and a non-steam setting.

Set each piece of melted crayon wax paper aside to cool off before cutting your hearts. The wax paper won’t look pretty right now, but it will later!

Now all that’s left to do is cut out your hearts and hang them in the window. To cut them, draw hearts on the wax paper using a pen and then cut just inside the pen line. You can cut three to five hearts per piece of wax paper. To mix things up a bit, cut hearts of various sizes.

Next, use a tiny dab of Elmer’s glue to attach the heart to the ribbon (I cut my ribbon length wise to make thinner strips). If you’re using string, poke a tiny hole near the top of the heart and thread the string through the hole.

Finally, hang the hearts in the window using tape and then sit back and enjoy your Valentine’s Crayon Hearts!
